Daily Photographer Post: Richard Avedon

Richard Avedon
(1923-2004)

An American photographer, Avedon was one of the most prominent fashion and portrait artists of the 20th century. He started out as a photographer for the Merchant Marines, then a department store, and then as a freelancer, providing images for magazines, including Vogue and LIFE. In 1946, Avedon became Harper's Bazaar's chief photographer, a position which he held for 20 years, until he took a job as staff photographer for Vogue magazine. In 1992, he became the first staff photographer for the New Yorker. Though the bulk of Avedon's work was fashion-related, he did try to branch out some, photographing mental patients, Civil Rights Movement activists, Vietnam War protesters, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and other documentary moments. His most famous portrait portfolio is In the American West.

Above are images from Avedon's In the American West.

Above are some photos from Avedon's fashion portfolio, the most famous being Dovima and the Elephants.

This was my tribute project from last semester, where I tried to recreate one of Avedon's images.
